Part 3 - What's in it for you, the pure scientist?
You were attracted to science because of the purity of the pursuit. You saw the opportunity to examine nature as it is, as objectively as possible. You saw a way to do some good for science and humankind. Or at least a chance to leave your mark and to be part of the scientific conversation through the ages. You aspire to help discover a drug or be involved in experiments that in the future can help lead to new drugs.
Although in an ideal world you’d be free of monetary and political concerns (it’s why you didn’t become a salesperson, doctor, lawyer, or politician), you are savvy to reality. Everything today must be done on a shoestring budget. Better, faster, cheaper is the modus operandi. There is little breathing room for following up on that curious result. It is often the unsettling finding that must be explored further; that is the itch that must be scratched.
